The fountain dates back to 1573, when Mastro Joseppe and Michel De Guido were appointed by the Court of the Waters of Naples to rearrange a medieval fountain. In 1582, after an earthquake, it did the first restoration, which involved changing the date on the epigraph. After new works the fountain was dismantled in the late nineteenth century and placed in municipal deposits. In 1930 it was rebuilt on the eastern side, and then isolated with a gate. Behind are posted three lion heads from whose mouths water flowed, while the top bears the coat of arms of the royal Habsburg. In the four medallions are carved in bas-relief faces two male and two female, perhaps identifiable with the Four Seasons.<\/p>\n
