The recognition that you do not expect for a product of excellence of Terra Felix: the mela annurca IGP, glory and pride of agricolture of Campania. Well, this fruit, bound to the fields of the Virgilio earth over two millennia (his depiction in paintings found in ruins at Herculaneum, testifies to the ancient bond of “Annurca” with the Roman world) would have beneficial effects for the control of bad cholesterol and contrast to baldness. This is certified by a study of the Department of Pharmacy of the University “Federico II” of Naples that the polyphenols extracted from meletipiche of Campania has got two nutraceutical products in advanced stages of human testing. Along with the Consortium Melannurca IGP, the department has signed, the Milan Expo, a memorandum of understanding that provides to producers of melannurca IGP can provide raw materials to the nutraceutical. The university of Federico II worked three years on the cultivar Annurca Apple and Red Apple South, grown in the production area IGP.

“All apples contain polyphenols – explains Gian Carlo Tenore, professor of chemistry and toxicology of the department – but the cultivar examined have a content of a group of polyphenols from recognized health effects, procyanidins, much higher than any other cultivar. So it was developed mela annurca cholesterol, a nutraceutical product can reduce total cholesterol by 28.8% and increase the expression of HDL (good cholesterol) by 60%”.
The beneficial effects on the human body of polyphenolic extracts obtained from apples annurche were already ‘known in the literature, but they were always tested in vitro. The product has a daily total polyphenols – 800 milligrams. – Equivalent to eight apples, and it is in the final phase of human trials. Replicated the process for AppleMets hair, that effectively fights baldness, allowing the regrowth of hair with a significant increase also in hair diameter. In this case the study focused on the selection of procyanidin B-2, responsible for the effect regrowth.

Named after the Samnite tribes who lived here between 600 and 200 BC, Sannio is a beautiful area of rolling green hills dotted with perfectly conserved old towns small enough for visitors to see more than one a day. Take Faicchio for instance: a cobblestone street leads from the town centre past quaint chapels to the recently restored, austere, medieval convent of San Salvatore housing splendid 18th century frescoes. The monastery enjoys a superb view over the green valley protecting the ducal palace – now a hotel and restaurant with a beautiful courtyard and portico Other sites open to the public are the Roman aqueduct, a long, slightly arched tunnel through the mountain side and the 3rd century BC bridge of Fabius Maximus, scene of a battle between Hannibal’s army and the Roman legions [charme-gallery]The town centre has a classic medieval layout with delightful buildings and hewn stone monuments. Sant’Agata dei Goti is a historic town perched on a spur between two tributaries of the River Isclero. A number of religious buildings are to be found along the main street and in small squares flanked by antique residences and beautiful shops as it winds its way to the belvedere beneath the lofty ridge. The cathedral overlooking the fountain in the small square was probably built on the ruins of an ancient pagan temple and houses a superb 17th century wooden choir made by Alessandro De Rosa, and the remains of the 13th century mosaic floor. Also worth visiting is the St Francis ofAssisi church and convent, home to monks who came to the town in 1267. [charme-gallery]The church has a baroque façade and interior while its bell tower and clock has a recently restored majolica roof. However, Sant’Agata dei Goti is also famed for the quality of its local produce, including aromatic olive oil, fine white and red wines, vegetables, cereals and fruit – especially cherries and the famous annurca apples, which were given the protected geographic origin label (Igp) in 2006.

Despite the ‘macabre’ connotation regarding the dead attributed to it by Pliny the Elder, the Annurca apple Igp (protected geographical indication) has long been a symbol of the genuineness and fertility ofCampaniafelix. Red, crunchy and aromatic with a compact white flesh, it also possesses extraordinary therapeutic properties that has made it the preferred ‘medicine’ of young and old for over two millennia; indeed, the fruit is depicted in frescoes found in the House of the Deer at Herculaneum. According to Pliny’s Naturalis Historia, the apple came from the fertile plain around Pozzuoli, just a stone’s throw from Lake Avernus and the gateway to the underworld – an origin confirmed in the 16th century by Gian Battista Della Porta who mentions the apple in his Pomarium However, the name ‘annurca’ does not appear until almost three centuries later in a book on arboriculture by G. A. Pasquale.[charme-gallery] The annurca and southern red varieties are grown primarily in the provinces ofCaserta,Benevento andNaples (50,000 tons per year) and have an unmistakeable flavour thanks to the particular microclimate The apple’s popularity is now beginning to spread beyond the region’s borders, thanks to its being rich in vitamins, fibre and minerals and having renowned anti-oxidant properties The Campania Annurca apples are ripened on the ground on layers of straw or wood shavings and received the Igp label in 2006, one year after the creation of the Consortium for the apple’s protection and promotion.
