The Royal Botanical Garden of Naples is in all respects a noble estate and truly secular only if we consider its origins dated back to December 28, 1807, the day on which the structure was founded on the decree of Giuseppe Bonaparte.
Actually, the project had been launched earlier by King Ferdinando IV but slid inexorably because of the motions of the revolt of 1799.

However, once work began on the construction of the immense estate of green Foria street, it was clear to those who rely on the onerous task.
The chosen because they were two, were the architects Giuliano de Fazio and Gaspare Maria Paoletti, the first author of the monumental entrance facade and the central avenue and the second is responsible for the design of the lower part of the garden. But once completed the work of building , you had to decide who to entrust the direction of the structure.

Here then is spotted in the person of Michele Tenore the first director of the botanical garden, which organized the natural complex according to scientific criteria clearly defined.
During his long tenure, Tenore enriched the collections of the garden with over 9,000 species of plants and made known the beauty of the garden in the world.
Then the rudder passed to Guglielmo Gasparrini: it is he who has the merit of introducing an area intended to accommodate specimens of rare alpine plants and the construction of a heated greenhouse.

[charme-gallery]

To Gasparrini succeeded by many other makers , but not all proved up to the task.
So it was that in 1906 it fell to Fridiano Cavara, the then director, to develop a plan for economic recovery and structural real garden.
First, Cavara established the experimental station for medicinal plants and started work on the new headquarters of the institute.
But unfortunately the dark times for the green townhouse were not finished.
The Second World War was, in fact , at the gates, and would have brought devastation and destruction.

So it was really difficult the task entrusted to Giuseppe Catalano, who after World War II had to revive the fortunes of the natural area, freeing the meadows from concrete floors and enriching of trees.
So in 1963 we see the first signs of recovery thanks to the direction of Aldo Merola, under whose administration the garden reach economic independence and administrative, which makes it possible to obtain funding to improve the appearance of the structure, starting from the creation of several greenhouses, a heating system and water supply and the official establishment of the professional gardener in the botanical garden.

[charme-gallery]

Still, it was in those years that were cultivated relationships with major European and nice gardens and the educational aspect of the complex.
Despite the subsequent 80 earthquake that struck the seal again, we can say that today the real-century complex, belonging to Federico II University of mathematical, physical and natural sciences, has maintained almost intact its everlasting charm.

Twelve-hectare, 9,000 plant species and nearly 25,000 copies, here is an oasis of nature and that as stated in the act of its construction was to be: “A structure for the education of the public and to the multiplication of spices useful to health, agriculture and industry”.

Imagine an oasis surrounded by greenery, there, in the heart of Naples.
An oasis with breathtaking views at 150 meters above sea level, picturesque and steep cliffs with tuff outcrops on the characteristics typical of natural sculptures.
All surrounded by hundreds of trees and shrubs of different species. Well, open your eyes: you are exactly in the beautiful Virgilian Park, the pride of the neighborhood “good” Posillipo, one of the places most admired by tourists and locals visiting the treasures of the city of Partenope.

But we discover more about the origins of this Garden of Eden on earth.
The park was built in the twenties of the twentieth century, soon after the end of World War I, on the orders of the then High Commissioner for the Province of Naples and later opened in 1930 under the name of Victory Park, just to remember the success the Italian army in the Great War.
It was in those years that, in the large garden, according to the dictates of the fascist regime that had wanted the building was built a sports facility, which still exists, with a football field and a running track.

Thus, the space was born as a place to regenerate not only the spirit but also and above the body, intent in fact not difficult to reach these heights.
How not to be regenerated before the spectacle offered by the natural terraces overlooking the blue of the enchanting islands of Procida, Ischia and Capri and the island of Nisida? The glance at this latitude, is an absolute delight!
Not to mention the entertainment given by the bays of the Gulf of Bacoli, Monte di Procida and Sorrento Coast to the Bay of Trentaremi with its archaeological remains.
All wrapped up in one amazing piece of paradise grafted on the gentle slopes of the hill of Posillipo.

[charme-gallery]

But do not forget that the green lung located on the tip of the promontory of Coroglio, then called “Virgilian” in honor of the Roman poet who is believed buried here, went through difficult times in the past and neglect.
It ‘ was in fact only since 1999 that the estate were made substantial changes designed to improve it. Changes that are worth seeing in detail.
Thanks to the collaboration between the City of Naples and the Faculty of Architecture, University Federico II, in fact it have been prepared and approved a detailed plan for redevelopment of the site for the creation of a public park.

It was to achieve four key objectives, including the elimination of paved areas in favor of green areas, the preservation and restoration of the existing vegetation, the reconquest of scenic spots and the final elimination of barriers and internal subdivisions.
The fruits of the work have become visible since 2002, the year of the inauguration of the new plant that has returned to the citizens and to the patrons a fundamental place of sport, nature and gathering place for families, youth and sports intent to spend hours of fun and lightheartedness in one of the most beautiful scenery of the city. Seeing to believe.

There are few who do not know the legendary park Floridiana, the pride and the pride of the city of Naples, situated in the heart of Vomero district.
But not everyone may have never studied the history of the beautiful hillside villa, which, as we shall see has ancient origins and veined by an authentic aura of romance.
So let us go back in time and go back to the year 1815, when the then King of Naples, Ferdinando IV of Bourbon decided to buy the large plot of green that corresponded to the estate of Prince Giuseppe Caracciolo of Torella, deciding to make it the seat of a stately home to give, then, as a wedding present to his wife Lucia Migliaccio, Duchess of Floridia.

The king married the woman after the death of his first wife occurred the year before, and although she never conceded the title of queen, however, found a way to win her heart with a “cadeau” of those very generous: a “candy” architectural surrounded by green hills on one of the most prestigious hills of the capital?
The king, who evidently was a generous man and great views, decided to also purchase the neighboring property with the seal of the Caracciolo transforming what was then a country house, and extending to the neighborhood of Chiaja.
At the end of the renovation and expansion, entrusted to the architect Antonio Niccolini, the complex that came out included two villas: Villa Lucia Villa Floridia and the open-air theater, called “the Verzura”.

[charme-gallery]

The entire line of furniture followed the neoclassical style, as well as the circular Ionic temple.
All of course surrounded by the immense estates of green, about eight hectares, with 150 specimens of plants, put there under the supervision of Friedrich Dehnardt, director of the Botanical Garden of Naples.
After the death of the Duchess, which took place in 1826, the buildings of the summer residence so dear to the noble woman, underwent numerous transformations to the heirs.

Villa Lucia and part of the park were sold to individuals, while the current Floridiana, which can be accessed from Via Cimarosa and Via Aniello Falcone, along with the rest of the park were purchased, subsequently, from newborn unitary state, which we exhibited the collection received pottery donated by Maria Spinelli Scalea, who had inherited from his uncle Placido di Sangro, Duke of Martina (from whom the museum is named).

[charme-gallery]

The historical complex from 1931 to the present, houses inside one of the largest collections of Italian decorative arts, works of manufacture comprising about seven Western and Eastern Europe, dating from the twelfth to the nineteenth century.

No doubt about it: the magnificence of a place so suggestive of some indifferent and does not leave despite the many changes that have occurred over time, the real charm of the garden Vomero does not seem to want to scratch with the passage of time, even if possible, continues to grow and continues to attract many tourists and visitors who are enchanted by the magnificent belvedere overlooking the Gulf of Naples, the flagship of the nineteenth-century estate.
