Paths dog-out into the rock, favoured accesses to heavenly beaches, were modelled by Greeks, Etruscans, Oscs, and Romans, who built steep stairs and tortuous trails on Terra Felix slopes to connect landing places with the new settlements. They were also a scarecrow for the pirates coming from the sea wanting to assault the villages on the hills. These paths have evocative names, that tell their origin and importance. Every coast in Campania has a track revealing glimpses of heaven, within a stone’s throw from villages and small squares, lemon groves and rivulets. Let’s make a tour among the most popular paths found on tourist maps of Dream Coast and Capri.

Let’s start from the descent to Fiordo of Crapolla, marvellous inlet set between Recommone beach and Punta Taschiero, in Area Marina Protetta of Punta Campanella. A steep 5 km long trail, from the centre of Torca, hamlet of Massa Lubrense, to the small beach below. After a maze of small pathways, near Larito stream and via Cafariello, the slant becomes a path where stands an age-old stair with 800 steps decorated with majolica: the view is stunning. Nearby there’s a chapel dedicated to Saint Peter, who, according to the legend, had stopped there. From the aforementioned chapel starts the descent to the picturesque Marina di Crapolla.

Between Amalfi Coast and Sorrento Peninsula winds the striking “Sentiero degli Dei” (Path of the Gods). Sometimes it is called Sentiero degli Dei the path going from Santa Maria di Castello village to Bomerano, hamlet of Agerola, the so-called “Alto” (high) trail, that continues with a “Basso” (low) trail from Bomerano to Nocelle, hamlet of Positano. This last trail is considered by experts of local history the real “Sentiero degli Dei”, attested in maps and documents since the XVII century. The amazing view offered by this long trail is unique. From Bomerano one arrives to the so-called “Grotta Biscotto”, with old houses set into the mountain. From here, passing near the rock called “il Pinnacolo”, one gets to Colle La Serra and its charming view on the Peninsula, and then to the junction with Praiano path where monastery of San Domenico and the small Nocelle village are worth a visit.[charme-gallery]

From Sentiero degli Dei departs a path leading to Ieranto Bay, one of the most beautiful places of Area Marina Protetta of Punta Campanella, with its view on Capri’s Faraglioni. The term Jeranto derives from ancient Greek “jerax” predacious, because this promontory from above looked like a bird of prey with stretched wings. The name was probably given by the Greek settlers who built a temple dedicated to Athena (later dedicated to Minerva by the Romans).

The trail leading to the bay winds along Monte San Costanzo, starting from Nerano village, hamlet of Massa Lubrense, and giving an amazing view on the coast below Marina del Cantone and on Li Galli islands. From the crossroads of Mont’Alto is possible to visit the tower of guard and the famous Punta Penna, or to go directly on Jeranto beach.

The slant toward the sea winds along an old stair once conducting to a quarry which closed down in 1952. Recently restored by Fondo Ambiente Italiano (Fai), it represents a rare piece of industrial archaeology set into a piece of Eden.

In Amalfi Coast there’s Furore, a small village renowned worldwide for its Fiordo. Actually it isn’t really a fiord but a recess at the outlet of a sheer valley. The Fiordo of Furore has a 30 m high suspension bridge, where every summer is hosted a lap of Great Heights Diving World Championship. A way to reach it is “Volpe Pescatrice” path, a long and narrow stair winding from Carmine square, near Sant’Elia church, to the bay below. The walk, after passing by Palazzo dei Maccaronari, arrives to a little stair leading to the fishing village houses.

Nearby Furore, there are Ravello and Amalfi beaches, like Castiglione beach, hamlet of Ravello, a gem set into the rocks. The cove is tied to the motorway by a 186 steps stair. Also Conca dei Marini, Duoglio and Santacroce beaches can only be reached by means of steep stairs.

Capri, pearl of the Gulf and destination of kings since ancient Romans time, possesses four striking paths connecting the sea with inland.

The most famous is Via Krupp, long 1,3 km, connecting Capri historical centre with Marina Piccola. Via Krupp was built by the German steel magnate Friedrich Alfred Krupp, who bought the area between San Giacomo Chartreuse and Castiglione, and proposed the construction of the road named after him. The project ended in 1902. This panoramic path, drawn from a trail excavated by Friar Felice, a Portuguese monk living into the San Giacomo Chartreuse, has cliffs and terracing falling sheer to the sea. Capri rock is calcareous and therefore very friable, and for this reason Via Krupp has been closed many times.

Capri offers another famous walk: Sentiero dei Fortini, one of the most spectacular of the island. The path coasts the sea from Grotta Azzurra to Punta Carena Lighthouse, among rocks, promontories and deep bays. Its name derives from the three forts that once were used to defend the island: Orrico, Pino and Mesola, built by the English in 1806 and widened by the French after that Napoleon took Capri (4 October 1808).

Then, there’s Scalinata Fenicia, a long and steep stone stair connecting Capri and Anacapri built-up areas. It has 921 steps and it’s 1,7 km long. It was probably built by the Greek settlers to tie the two settlements founded at the time of colonization. Until 1877 Scalinata Fenicia has been the only access to Anacapri. Recently restored, it ends nearby Axel Munthe’s villa San Michele.

Last but not least, the walk of Migliera, an age-old road once linking Anacapri with Belvedere del Tuono. The trail winds from Piazza Vittoria and, through vicoletto Caposcuro and Seggiovia to Monte Solaro station, arrives in Via Migliera, among vineyards, lemon groves, cultivated fields, and a “philosophic park”, where silence and mother nature reign. The walk ends in Belvedere where there’s an amazing view stretching from Punta Carena Lighthouse to Faraglioni.

From Capri to Cilento through the Sorrento Peninsula… Other than Caribbean beaches. The real paradise on the beach is in Campania.

Just like that. Also this year our region has gained from Fee or Foundation for environmental education a significant number of Blue Flag, an international award dedicated to the beaches cleaner: 14 are in fact the seaside resorts of Campania excellence- one more than 2014 – and 280 throughout the boot.

New entry Capaccio, in the province of Salerno, while reconfirming the top, always in Salerno, Ascea, Vibonati, Centola-Palinuro, Casal Velino Agropoli (Trentova, San Marco), Montecorice (Agnone, Capital, San Nicola a Mare) Sapri (Lido di San Giorgio Sapri), Pisciotta, Pollica (Acciaroli and Pioppi), Castellabate and Positano, while in Naples Anacapri (Faro Punta Carena and Gradola Blue Grotto) on the Island Azzurra and Massa Lubrense, in the heart of the Sirens Bay.

According to the field recognition, Campania, it is the first for the South of Italy and a breath off the podium over the entire country and finished in fourth place among the regions with the highest number of clean beaches. The first figure Liguria with 23 locations, followed by Tuscany with 18 and Marche with 17. Scrupulous evaluation criteria.

To obtain the Blue Flag, it requires, inter alia, security in all its forms, perfect beach cleaning, bathing water quality conforms to the values laid down by the Directive, absence of landfills nearby, adequate information and environmental education, adequate access and services for disabled.

It first enchanted the Romans and was long ravaged by Saracen raiders, but the Land of the Sirens is now the second home to royalty, celebrities, industrialists and financiers, not to mention poets, writers and film directors. The Sorrento-Amalfi coast, with its hillsides of olive and citrus groves and lush Mediterranean vegetation descending into small bays, is beautiful from both land and sea. FromCastellammare di Stabiato Vietri sul Mare, the winding Sorrentina-Amalfitana road climbs up onto the cliffs and then down to the coast for about 100 km, offering breathtaking views of Capri, the Gulfs of Naples andSalernoand the densely forested mountainsides.[charme-gallery]

Starting from the Roman town ofStabiae, it heads up to Gragnano, the home of traditional pasta manufacture, and then on to Vico Equense and Seiano, renowned for their chesses, especially provolonedelmonacoand fiordilatte. Along the cliffs past Meta, Piano and Sant’Agnello toSorrento, the birthplace of Torquato Tasso and a favourite location for film director Vittorio De Sica. Around the headland with its magnificent villas immersed in the maquis, past Massa Lubrense to Punta Campanella where the Penisola Sorrentina becomes the Costiera Amalfitana, and the land is suspended between the sea and the sky.[charme-gallery] The picturesque hillsides of Positano and Praiano, the “painted village” of Furore, Conca dei Marini, the old paper mills and villas of Amalfi and Ravello, Minori, Maiori, Cetara and the ceramic museum at Raito: famous places with a heady atmosphere, beautiful views as well as the best in local craftsmanship, luxury hotels and smart guesthouses.

Massa Lubrense in the Land of the Sirens is located on the promontory separating the Sorrento and Amalfi coasts. Beautiful beaches, coves that can only be reached by boat, breathtaking views, sheer cliffs overlooking the Bay of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno with Capri seemingly in reach of your fingertips and the tang of the sea blending delicately with the heady odours of the Lattari mountains. The area needs to be savoured by all five senses, and the local restaurants cater for the needs of the taste buds with exquisite dishes of the Sorrento Peninsula, such as Spaghetti alla Nerano, named after the seaside locality where the recipe was invented.

1100 g courgettes (zucchini)

500 g olive oil

100 g grated parmesan cheese

chopped fresh basil

salt

pepper

500 g spaghetti

Preparedness

Slice the courgettes into discs 2-3mm thick and fry, a few at a time, in 1Ž2 litre of oil until golden. As each batch is removed, place in a bowl and sprinkle with some of the cheese, butter, pepper and a little salt. Cook the spaghetti, drain and place in a flame-proof dish with the courgettes and a couple of tablespoons of the oil in which the courgettes were fried.

A swim in the bays of Ieranto and Mitigliano, a boat trip fromCapeSorrentoto Vetara and from Nerano to Tordigliano, exploring caves on the small beaches of Crapolla or Recommone or a scuba tour of the sea bed around the Li Galli islands. A variety of fishing trips by day and night, a trek through the lemon groves ofSorrentoto the abandoned ruins of the area’s many Roman villas where fish were farmed in natural pools or a visit to the new turtle hospital at Villa Angelina. These are some of the fun activities organised by the Punta Campanella marine reserve that even those on a short stay in the area will not want to miss. [charme-gallery]Since 1997, the lushSorrentocoastline between Vico Equense and Positano, theLandofSyrens, has been designated the Punta Campanella Marine Reserve (named after the promontory of the Lattari mountains that looks out onto the beautiful isle ofCapri). The landscape here has an antique flavour that permeates the 1,500 hectares of reserve and the 31,000 metres of coastline that make up the heart of the reserve (where the only authorised activities are research and wildlife management), the general reserve (for low impact activities) and partial reserve (a buffer zone for general purpose activities and the promotion of the wildlife and heritage of the maritime and coastal environment.[charme-gallery]

The conservation and management activities of the reserve, which include cleaning the sea bed, scientific research and maintenance of the cliff faces, inlets and beaches, have been entrusted to the park authority and its partners. They have created trails along the coast so that visitors can discover watch towers and places of worship, olive and citrus groves, traditional handicrafts and folk ceremonies that date back to the times of Odysseus and the Syrens, the cult of Athena and the Roman villas of Pollio Felix, Agrippa Postumus and others dotted along the coast.

Defending the marine habitat is an army of multicoloured algae, starfish, sea anemones, sea urchins, molluscs, crustaceans and fish which can also be admired in a curious ‘underwater book’, whose laminated pages can be studied as you swim around under the sea.
