Some climb Everest, others do bungee jumping, but hardened thrill-seekers venture into Naples’ Via San Gregorio Armeno at Christmas time. But, seriously, experiencing the street famed for its nativity scenes is well worth the effort of riding the tidal wave of visitors during the holiday period. The ideal route into the area starts from the metro station in Piazza Dante: go through the Port’Alba archway and along Via San Sebastiano with its numerous bookshops and musical instrument shops. Then turn into Spaccanapoli with Piazza del Gesù and the Santa Chiara monastery behind you and, as you walk, admire the beautiful noble buildings on either side and breathe in the heady aroma of the region’s local dishes and delicacies, from limoncello to pasta and patisserie. [charme-gallery]Beyond Piazza San Domenico Maggiore and a short stretch of Via San Biagio dei Librai, an opening on the left leads you into the unique and magical realm of nativity figures. This ancient street joining the two ancient Roman decumani, now called Via Tribunali and Spaccanapoli, is heavy with the perfume of moss and bark from the hundreds of tiny shops and workshops whose craftsmen make nativity scenes and figures to suit all pockets, including some whose families have been nativity artisans for generations. The shops and stalls sell everything you need for a nativity scene: buildings and features made of cardboard and tree bark, some supplied with electricity for extra realism; small, hand-painted terracotta figurines alongside others up to 50 cm tall with hand-stitched costumes; tradesmen like greengrocers to pizza-makers and the classic nativity characters of the shepherd, Wise Men, Holy Family and stable animals. [charme-gallery]Every self-respecting Neapolitan goes to San Gregorio Armeno at Christmas to enhance the family nativity scene with the addition of at least one figure, some of whom come from the world of entertainment, sport and politics such as Diego Maradona or Luciano Pavarotti. In addition its nativity figurines, the area has is also famous as the birthplace of important Italian writers and philosophers, such as Gian Battista Vico, Francesco de Sanctis and Benedetto Croce. It is also a centre of cult worship centred on the monastery of Saint Gregory of Armenia, reputedly built on the ruins of the Temple of Ceres in 930 AD. The enclosed nuns have taken vows not only to Saint Gregory but also to Saint Patricia, a popular saint among the Neapolitans who regularly flock to witness the liquefaction of her blood.[charme-gallery]

The culture with music.
Sunday 9 and 23 November from 8.00 to 14.00, the citizens of the city of Naples will have an irresistible opportunity to visit free of the State Archives of Naples, accompanied by the sweet melodies performed by famous musicians, thanks to the support of the Association Napolinova.
But let’s see in detail what to expect.
The “Sunday in the Archive” allows you to experience and explore the precious documents on the history of the city and the region, arranged on more than 50,000 linear feet of shelving and building housed Spaccanapoli, not coincidentally right in the heart of downtown.

[charme-gallery]

Recall that the construction began in the Napoleonic period, December 22, 1808, to concentrate in one place the ancient archives of the kingdom of southern Italy, the guardian of an important documentary heritage, which also includes documents from the Council of State and the United Court of Accounts of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
Over the years, the building has, however, suffered serious structural losses, especially during the Second World War, so the visit will take place in what is today the home of the prestigious store, or the magnificent monumental complex of the former Benedictine monastery of Santi Severino and Sossius, in which you can admire the room rate, the cloister of marble, Catasti the room, the room Filangieri, in honor of Riccardo Filangieri, first Superintendent of the Neapolitan Provinces from 1940 to 1952 and then Director of the State of Naples, and yet the cloister of the Plane (whose name comes from the plane tree, according to legend, it was planted by St. Benedict).

“Sunday in the archive”
9:23 November 2014, a hours 8:00 to 14:00 (last admission 13:00)
State Archives, the square of the great Naples Archive

“Leopoldo“, a name that evokes goodness. And for decades, is a guarantee for gourmets and lovers of delicacies “Made in Naples”. One reason that more valid … “redouble” the offer. The famous brand of Leopoldo Infante opens in Spaccanapoli, in the historic center of the ancient capital, a new store reviving the tradition of exquisite tarallo ‘nzogna and pepper as street food quality, the symbol of Naples, tasty amarcord and recovery of identity territorial strong and deeply rooted.

The “Neapolitan tarallo“, you read that right: one of the “signature” of the most celebrated culinary Partenope, along with the traditional pizza. That lard and pepper, of course. Studded with whole almonds, still worked strictly by hand, and then baked by the masters of Leopoldo that make it, in the middle of the third millennium, a pleasant stroll from gluttony. Almost a new fashion for an aperitif in conjunction with bubbles bells.

Well, it is on the recovery of what is thus a symbol of the oldest and most popular Neapolitan cuisine, born the concept of the new store that Leopoldo nod to contemporary tastes without losing sight of tradition. In the heart of Naples oldest and most emblematic Decuman along the bottom, better known as Spaccanapoli corner of Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, opens the doors to the new Leopold café bar is a cozy space, about 100 square meters, decorated with traditional polka dots, with tables and chairs for a break to relax and take away the original packaging and walking.

[charme-gallery]

The selection of the new local ranging from sweet to savory. This is because over the years Leopold has gained solid experience in traditional pastry that supports the production of baked goods and small rotisserie quality. No coincidence that a bank is dedicated to ice cream, craft and quality. Now, on the occasion of the new opening, the historic brand made in Partenope launches tarallo olive oil. A new delicacy that turns the classic tarallo ‘nsogna and pepper in a modern product closer to the food needs of today, also thought to vegans and vegetarians. Among the new features in the pipeline even mixture of “coffee Leopoldo” in take-away packages and classic liqueurs such as limoncello or fragolino, these designer Leopoldo.

Leopold is a brand that comes from far away. His, in fact, is a story that has its roots in the ancient tradition of tarallari, when the streets of Naples resounded invitation to taste the warm bagels “‘nzogna and pepper“. The company, from the time of its founder Leopoldo Infante, has been transformed to become today a brand that is synonymous with goodness and excellence in quality, varied product and worked with love, from cakes to pies, from pasta to food timballetti Neapolitan. The company’s development has been made by one of the sons of the founder, Gianni, who led her to become one of the most prestigious brands in the food Neapolitan, thanks to the final contribution of his sons Nunzia and Leopoldo Infante, sons of art and craft of Gianni Infante.

The laboratory of Leopold has a staff of over 20 employees including confectioners, chefs, trimmers, and logistics personnel. The production is fully centralized in the laboratory semi-industrial with some manual steps yet. The undisputed star of the products of Leopold is undoubtedly the tarallo, that warm, classic almond, tasty and fragrant, but other than that classic, there are many variations in both size and flavor, as tarallini tasting and appetizer with peppers, with broccoli, olives and corn. The range of sweet and savory products is really wide, craft production has about two hundred entries, in addition to the products created specifically for customers.

[charme-gallery]

The pastry is the classic Neapolitan, and goes by the baba puffs, and is available in either single-portion which mignon. The range of dry products is very broad and ranges from shortbread to those up to the cherry almond squares, also very popular with tourists and Business travelers, for obvious reasons of convenience in transport packaging with a nice, quick and practical gifts. The salt production, provided always that single version mignon, is that of rotisserie classic Neapolitan: there are rustic pastry, puff pastry, sandwiches of various kinds, baked pizzas, fries and pies.

The packs of Leopoldo are the most sought after us both about the food packaging. Inspired by the visual communication and graphic design vintage French side of the Alps, with polka dots in black and white, are a real novelty in the context of what has been achieved in Naples and Italy: boxes and trunks that are proposed almost like handbags take with a pinch of coquetry.

Leopoldo currently has four stores in Naples – Via Toledo, Via Vittoria Colonna, via Scarlatti and the new Via Benedetto Croce – who are at the same time, a café, a bar, confectionery, bakery, ice cream and Cocktaileria.

A statue that adorns the old quarter of the Egyptian street SpaccaNapoli and that the Neapolitans call it, has always been , “Body of Naples “, which now returns almost intact thanks to the return by the collector, the specimen found by surveys of patients police of the core of the protection of cultural heritage in Naples.

The ancient artifact , as explained by Captain Carmine Elefante, was recovered by monitoring the markets and the national and international collections, as part of routine check-ups, last September, when the soldiers of the core specialist spotted in the collection some objects whose account they wanted to see clearly.

[charme-gallery]

The collector had acquired the piece for his legacy and the “good faith” is also demonstrated by the documents. The head, thanks to a synergy between superintendents and a committee of individuals that is working to raise funds, will be repositioned on the monument Naples by the end of next year. To decree that the head of the sphinx was just vandalized and removed from the “Body of Naples” after World War II, in particular, in addition to the findings, the perfect correspondence of the holes at the base with the circumference of the irons and positioning residues on the age-old sculpture opens the doors of Decuman greater.

The statue of “lying Nile” is the only evidence left in the city from an ancient colony of merchants from Alexandria that before the second century AD. C. had settled in the upper area of the Decumani. According to tradition, after the departure of the Egyptians, the “lying Nile” was deprived of the head and then buried until twelve centuries later someone rediscovered it and handed to the cult of Naples. In ‘600, the statue, which probably originally had the appearance of a woman, it was restored with the addition of the face of a bearded man.

Descending from the San Martino hillside along the route of the ancient Roman decumanus inferior, the long, narrow street known as “Spaccanapoli” splits the city in two and takes pedestrians through an open air museum chronicling the entire history of Naples from as far back as the Greco-Roman polis whose defensive walls can still be seen in Piazza Calenda. In the 14th century, the Anjou kings opened up the city to make it the heart of their kingdom, and it wasn’t long before beautiful churches and monuments began to appear in the districts traversed by Spaccanapoli. One of the most important of these is the Franciscan Santa Chiara monastery in Piazza del Gesù Nuovo, built on the remains of Roman baths to include the basilica where the Anjou kings were buried, a museum and archaeological area, the majolica cloister and the 18th century nativity scene room. The Dominican order established themselves a store’s throw away in the monumental San Domenico Maggiore church built between 1283 and 1324 by Charles of Anjou. The complex was the university’s theology centre and welcomed many eminent scholars like St Thomas Aquinas and Giordano Bruno. [charme-gallery]The 10th century church of Sant’Angelo a Morfisa has a superb 14th century portal. Nearby, in the former Egyptian quarter, is the churchof Sant’Angeloa Nilo built as a family chapel in 1385 by Cardinal Rinaldo Brancaccio, whose tomb carved by Donatello and Michelozzo is the building’s finest artwork. Looking onto Via Duomo and built in 1575, the former church of San Severo al Pendino is a splendid example of 16th century architecture while, a few metres away is the paleo-christian church of San Giorgio Maggiore. Another iconic symbol of historic Naplesis the Real Casa dell’Annunziata complex with its characteristic underground church (the Subcorpus). Built during the 14th century, the monument housed the famous wooden “wheel”, a kind of revolving cylinder where abandoned children were placed. The wheel was last used on 22 June 1875.

When the Siren Parthenope, spurned by the Greek hero Odysseus, beached herself on the island of Megaris, little did she know that almost 1000 years later it would be the site of one of the Roman Empire’s most lavish houses, the villa of Lucius Licinius Lucullus, or that it would provide the foundations for the magnificent Castel dell’Ovo, Naples’s landmark fortress. And manor of Virgil, magician, poet and healer. Historic protector of the city during the years of the Middle Ages.

The links between the ex capital of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and the deeds and legends of the ancient world are stronger than might be expected, starting with the city’s name: Neapolis was the “new city” of the Greek colonies that were appearing throughout Magna Graecia along the Tyrrhenian shore, and much archaeological evidence of this settlement has been brought to light. Naplesis one ofItaly’s oldest cities, dating as far back as the 9th century BC when the first colonists transferred here from nearby Cuma. [charme-gallery]Up to settle in one of the most beautiful and enchanting of all ofNaples: the hill of Posillipo. Its name derives from the greek Pausilypon which literally means “a respite from danger” or “that could stop the pain”, a name linked to the breathtaking view that you also enjoyed 2,500 years ago by this extraordinary arm of land stretching out into the sea. The city was part of Magna Graecia up until the Samnite Wars, when it fell under Roman control, although it preserved its Hellenistic nature and Greek was the city’s official language until the 2nd century AD. Its road layout was also typically Greek, with long straight streets intersecting at right angles, which the Romans left virtually untouched and have survived to the present day. The Greek ramparts have likewise survived and can be seen in Piazza Bellini, Piazza Cavour and elsewhere in the historic city centre – some incorporated into modern buildings – and it is said that even the mightyHannibalwas unable to breach the city defences. [charme-gallery]However, Greco-Roman Naples is not just about bricks and mortar. The city’s famous Duomo conserves the early Christian basilica of Santa Restituta, built by command of the Emperor Constantine on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Apollo, whose Corinthian columns are still visible in the Cathedral Chapel. Beneath the cathedral, archaeologists have found traces of a road with grooves left by cart wheels, the remains of some opus reticulatum buildings and lavish mosaic floors. Other ‘survivors’ include the Statue of the Nile in nearby Piazzetta Nilo, heart of the Egyptian quarter at the times of the Empire, while Piazza San Gaetano was the site of the Greek Agora, Odeon and the Temple of the Dioscuri, some features of which are still visible in the church of San Paolo Maggiore. The rest was buried by silt and ash from the eruption of Vesuvius. This stratification phenomenon, caused by the volcano’s successive eruptions and the frequent flooding to whichNapleswas subject, buried much of the ancient city and its waterways.[charme-gallery] Apart from the remains of a vast baths complex in San Giorgio ai Mannesi, an ancient theatre in Anticaglia, the Roman aqueduct in Ponti Rossi and the remains of friezes from pagan temples in the base of the bell tower in Piazzetta della Pietrasanta, most of the city was engulfed in mud or covered by ash and volcanic lapilli.

However, it is still there. Tourists can take an adventurous tour down wells and along narrow tunnels into huge underground caverns beneath the thoroughfares of the modern metropolis for a breathtaking visit to the ancient streets and early Christian catacombs. One of the entrances to the underground city is to be found near thechurchofSan Paolo Maggiore, but the sight that should not be missed is the remains of the Roman market place and street beneath the foundations of San Lorenzo Maggiore.
