“The Dna of Naples is to be found here” said Master Riccardo Muti, In rhe “pretty and beautiful temple” as Boccaccio called it, the famous poet met Fiammetta, and always here Petrarch lived for a while. Three superimposed periods, joined into a unique, precious casket, to be discovered from top to bottom.

Painters, architects, sculptors and archaeologists have written wonderful pages on the basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore in Naples. It is here, in the heart of the city of Naples, that the two souls of the city of Virgil and St. Gennaro join together, creating an amalgam of rare beauty. “It’s a monument to books. In the complex of San Lorenzo Maggiore one can read the history of Naples in clear letters. The Dna of Naples is to be found here” said Master Riccardo Muti, before a concert. This phrase perfectly describes the “pretty and beautiful temple” as Boccaccio called it. The famous poet met Fiammetta, his inspiring muse, for the first time in this church in 1334 and always here, a few years later, Petrarch lived for a while.

The monumental complex of Piazza San Gaetano, which attracts thousands of visitors each year and hosts important events, represents a kind of “trait d’union”, a rare example of the continuity of life, which testimonies the plurisecular life of Naples. Above, stands the thirteenth-century church founded by Carlo d’Angiò. At the bottom, lies what remains of an ancient Greek-Roman settlement. At the centre, as a symbolic “watershed”, are the ruins of a building dating back to the Norman domination. Three superimposed periods, joined into a unique, precious casket, to be discovered from top to bottom.

Near the eighteenth-century cloister of the basilica, is it possible to admire the ruins of the ancient Roman Macellum in the archaeological site of San Lorenzo Maggiore. The structure was arranged on terraces and has, in its center, a circular colonnade (tholos).

Through a modern staircase, it is possible to directly access the archaeologal site of San Lorenzo Maggiore, “The Buried Naples” from the cloister of the church. Here, at 7.8 meters underground, there is the ancient Forum of Neapolis and an old market which dates back to the 4th century BC. Other stratifications of the imperial age are to be found there.

The route runs along a narrow street (cardine), over which there are nine shops, each with two rooms. Originally, they may have hosted public offices, including the Aerarium, where the city treasury was guarded. Following the decay of the Empire, they became small workshops such as bakeries and laundries.

At the end of the narrow street, on the right, there is an open cryptoportic (the covered market): the area is divided into small buildings. These are shops with masonry desks that were used for displaying the merchandise on sale. The final part of the “porch” is linked to a large vaulted environment where there is a late-Hellenistic hydraulic structure: it was used to channel the flow of rainwater. A little further away, immediately next to a tub, there is another complex: three large interconnecting rooms, with a mosaic floor and an impluvium in the central part of the house. It may have been a schola, which was, a building intended for meetings of religious or commercial associations. In this area there are also some wall remakes of the late antique medieval period.

The archaeological site of San Lorenzo Maggiore in Naples was brought to light with a vast excavation campaign that began in the late seventies of the last century. Interrupted several times, the campaign was finally concluded in May 2009, thanks to the funding of the European Union. Many of the objects and finds recovered during the excavations are now on show in the adjacent Opera Museum, hosted in the bell tower of the Basilica, which is worth a visit.

Six churchs for seven concerts absolutely free.
The attractive exhibition that blends with the landscape of the seven notes of the sacred to be held in Naples from November 1 to December 13, 2014 and promises to be the most anticipated event by many people who follow these steps with pleasure.
But let’s go into the details of the program which is part of the program, a training project stems from an agreement between the Diocese of Naples and the Campania Region, to promote music among young people, creating an opportunity for cultural and social growth.

[charme-gallery]

It starts November 1, 2014 with the group of Turchini of Antonio Florio who will perform in San Gregorio Armeno, then continue with the Vocal Ensemble of Naples, which will be hosted by the church of Sant’Anna dei Lombardi on November 8, 2014, where November 22, 2014 will arrive also the Baroque Ensemble of Naples.
November 14 will be the turn instead of Percussion Ketoniche, whose notes resonate sacred building of San Lorenzo Maggiore.
Space to contemporary musical languages with Dissonanzen to be stars of the evening of November 29, in the San Gennaro Extra Moenia.
Finally, it ends happily with two other valid artistic proposals, December 5 with the Project Sonora Network & Performing Arts, within the walls of the church of the Carmine Maggiore and December 13 in the company of Mysterium Vocis, who chose the church of Santa Maria Regina Nuova as magical scenery of the performance, among which there is also the “Lauda around the Stabat” by Roberto De Simone.
What can I say there is no better way to welcome the winter season upon us.

“Sing, play and walk”
1 november to 13 december 2014

The historic centre of Naples is built on top of a network of interconnected caverns and tunnels from the Greco-Roman Age, which can now be visited thanks to the work of the Napoli Sotterranea association. The earliest excavations date from prehistoric times, although it was the Greeks who first began systematically quarrying building materials, which have been used for the majority of construction work in Naples and around the Bay. All the Romans had to do was extend and enlarge the caverns dug by their predecessors and, when they reached a depth of 40 metres they discovered mineral water springs which created an enormous aqueduct for the entire city. Another underground site is tunnel Borbone at Chiaia (access roads are two: one is located in via D. Morelli, Morelli directly into the parking lot, near piazza Vittoria and the other in the vico del Grottone, no. 4 near Piazza Plebiscito).

On the surface, almost resting on the sunken treasures of Naples, stands the ancient heart of the city: the Old Town. The maze of long streets and narrow alleys that was the ancient Greco-Roman city of Neapolis and the venue of many legendary events can still be clearly seen in the historic centre of Naples between the fortresses of Castel Capuano and Castel Nuovo. It stands on the corner of Via dei Tribunali, the ancient thoroughfare of the Greek polis which links up to the ancient Roman decumani, now known as Spaccanapoli and Via San Giovanni a Carbonara.[charme-gallery]

On the left of Via dei Tribunali, near the theatre of Nero (Via Anticaglia), is the Ospedale della Pace. Further along the street stands the Spire of San Gennaro, an offering to the saint for protecting the city from the eruption of Vesuvius in 1631. Opposite this is the Pio Monte della Misericordia institution which was set up in 1603 to carry out works of charity and still houses some artistic masterpieces.

As you pass the bustling fruit and fish markets, the air fills with the exquisite aroma of pastries and pizzas around Piazza San Gaetano, where the basilica of San Paolo Maggiore provides access to the underground city, a place of mystery and fascination. On the left stands the monumental gothic complex of San Lorenzo Maggiore. Branching off from Piazza San Gaetano is Via San Gregorio Armeno, the colourful street of nativity scene craftsmen.[charme-gallery]

A little further on is the church of Santa Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio, renowned for the cult worship of the dead, whose skulls are carefully cleaned and conserved in the hope of receiving grace or just a winning on the lotto. Next is the gothic, tufa stone church of San Pietro a Majella alongside the Royal Conservatory of Music, from whose windows the notes of famous Neapolitan composers still linger in the air and float down to the many music shops in Via San Sebastiano and the nearby green-roofed gothic church of Santa Chiara and its splendid majolica cloisters.

Piazza del Gesù offers a breathtaking view of the rusticated façade of the church of Gesù Nuovo which contrasts sharply with its lavish baroque interior. Continuing along Via Monteoliveto, past the renaissance building of the University’s Faculty of Architecture and the Post Office built during Italy’s Fascist period, you reach what was once Largo delle Corregge, the former tournament field outside Charles I of Anjou’s majestic fortress of Castel Nuovo.
