The Rione Sanità position in Naples has been considered particularly salubrious over the last centuries. It goes from Capodimonte down to the valley, in a succession of luxuriant vegetation and sources of water. There have always been legends of miracles and healings believed to have been granted through the intercession of the saints, who were buried there. Rich and noble families travelled along the obligatory path that the Royals used to use to reach the Royal Palace situated in the hills. They started competing to order to build the most amazing Baroque buildings such as the superb and theatrical Palazzo del Spagnolo or Palazzo Sanfelice.

But such splendor did not last. First, the construction of the bridge and then that of the great mass grave, which had been created to contain the thousands of people decimated by continuous epidemics, eruptions, and famines. These were considered punishments and they fell at regular intervals on the city. These tragedies completely overwhelmed the laughing face of the Neighborhood. The subsoil was layered with the dead, from the early Christian catacombs to the Fontanelle cemetery. Eventually, the corpses of the dead were mixed, those of the epidemics with the poor who could not afford another burial place beyond the gigantic tufa quarry. Those unearthed from churches, togetherwith those of the revolts and earthquakes, were put together. The catacombs of San Gaudioso were reopened and reused by the Dominican friars for burials. The soil was sold at a very high price to those who wanted a privileged path directly to heaven. By procuring a tomb in a sacred place, plus the draining of the body, a macabre treatment of the corpse that would have purified the remains, “granted” the dead a discount in Purgatory.

The healthy land became an immense cemetery. The nobles gradually left. The great buildings were transformed into public housing and the market stalls found shelter in their immense doorways. The building of the bridge had cut the neighborhood out of the city, leaving it isolated. The Sanità had become an island. The humble people who were settling there created legends, cults and rites around death, with which they lived so intimately. It was the other side of life, with which to form an alliance with, to take advantages from. Unabling to expect help from the living, the people asked it from the dead. Thus the Fontanelle Cemetery became a sort of “Stargate”, between the Earth and the world of the dead. The people decided to adopt these “Anime Pezzentelle”, “poor souls”. Poor especially because they were orphans, without a name or family. People used to choose a skull, “‘na capuzzella”, which was considered as one of the family, but with miraculous abilities. This meant, however, that it had to be polished, placed on embroidered handkerchiefs, adorned with candles and flowers, giving it a name and a story.

From these stories were born the legends which are about some of the most famous Capuzzelle. These go from a Captain, a vengeful soldier. Another is about Friar Pasquale, who gives lottery numbers, to Donna Concetta, “the skull which sweats”. This skull is said to answers the prayers of those whose hand becomes damp when touching the skull.

But, in order to meet “the poor soul” in a dream, and to ask them for graces, it was necessary to give them “rifrisco”, that is relief, with prayers and suffrages. If these graces were granted, the skull would be honored by building it a kind of tabernacle made from the most diverse materials, from biscuit tins to marble, according to the person’s economic possibilities. If the grace was not granted, the skull would be abandoned and replaced with another. For a very long time, the Neapolitans took care of the “Anime Pezzentelle”: it did not matter if those remains belonged to strangers whose names had been forgotten over the centuries. Because every Neapolitan of the past is an ancestor of today’s Neapolitans. And until there is always someone that takes care of it, no one will be truly ever forgotten.

In the center of the square, there is a basilica whose dome of green majolica can be seen from almost all of Naples: Santa Maria alla Sanità, a great work of art by Fra Nuvolo. It is the place where one can still seem to see the plague victims praying. It arose there because it was a natural confinement. It is grandiose, but yet scarn. With its imposing marble staircases that rise upwards, it is a place where all the pain and hope of the people of the time seemed to have converged. It is the burial place of St. Vincent whose statue, while being carried in procession, interrupted the cholera epidemic.

Everything is made of tuff, in the Sanità. From the hills, flows “the Lava of the Virgini”, that is water and mud. It has eroded the area for thousands of years, creating the right conditions for its extraction. The catacombs were excavated from this raw material and with it the above buildings were built.

This is the element that physically connects the living and the dead, the one that permits the eternal dialogue that this neighborhood has with the afterlife.

The social and cultural isolation in which it was confined, served as a protection to modernity. A district where for many years the atmosphere of the De Filippo’s “Mayor of the Sanità district”, has survived compared to the new and cruel Gomorra of Scampia.

Today, by accessing Via dei Vergini, among the colorful stalls of the flourishing market next to the beautiful baroque buildings, there is a district in full rebirth. International artists are decorating the whole district with wall artworks and colorful Street art. Many, are the festivals and the white nights held here, and tourists are now discovering this immense heritage, which is also gastronomic. Here is possible to taste the best bread, desserts and pizzas of the whole city. In Via Santa Maria Antesaecula, can be found a gigantic drawing of Totò, who took inspiration from the faces of the people of the district to create his characters. Numerous films were filmed in this neighborhood, which is a true open-air set. When I looked for the place to set my novels, I could not choose but this one.

Forget Halloween. Forget the ancient pagan festival of Celtic origin dedicated to “all the dead” who return to earth, widespread in the United States by Irish immigrants and then landed in Italy, in its most banal and commercial aspect. Give up, for a moment, the costume parade, pumpkins and colourful games for children, who run from house to house, shouting ‘trick or treat’. I do not belong there. That is not the result of our history. So, enjoy the dear old ‘feast of the dead’, which falls on November 2. Brought forth as a Christian tradition, it later became a cult of the Bourbons in Naples, with the nougat of deaths and visits to the grave of the deceased.

So, what better way to honour the anniversary with an excursion to the famous ‘Valley of the Dead’? An unusual journey through the alleys and streets of the Sanità district of Naples. In “Cemiteru of the Fontanelle”, better known in town as the graveyard of the “death’shead”, or “pezzentelle souls”.[charme-gallery]

A pit dug in the heart of the tuff stone, in which the remains of thousands and thousands of people lay, victims of the plague that scourged Naples in 1656, but also of the cholera epidemic in 1836. Walking through bones and skeletons, in a surprising reality in which the sacred and the profane, magic and religion are intertwined and confused from time to time, you can discover the special relationship that has always been linked to the concept of Parthenope ‘beyond’.

This is also the place to get acquainted with famous people, from Capitano to Donna Concetta, from Don Pasquale to the newlyweds, just to mention some of the ‘dead’, which here rest in the sleep of the just and now give life to stories and folktales that with lightness and a hint of bitter irony always describe the soul and character of a people able to transform even the most dramatic events in opportunities for redemption and spirituality. (translated by Mauro Di Fenza)

In Naples the sacred and the profane meet. It is a place of myth, magic, prophecy, superstition, ritual and belief, and nowhere is this more evident than in the Fontanelle cemetery, home to the cult of the “penniless souls”. Every day for hundreds of years, Neapolitans have honoured the thousands of bones kept in this tomb dug out of the hillside in the city’s Sanità quarter, now a shrine to which believers flock in order to pray to the penniless souls for a grace or for their protection. [charme-gallery]There are thousands of skulls in the 6000 square meter cemetery, the mortal remains of the men, women and children who died in the 1656 outbreak of plague and were buried here by order of the city authorities. Over the years, other victims of epidemics were buried here in Via Vallone dei Gerolomini and, although they were mostly nameless paupers, here they were transfigured almost into saints, to whom the faithful would pray, telling them their hopes, fears and desires.

The poor from 17th century Naples are thus brought back to life through a well-defined ritual which believers must perform regardless of whether they seek a grace or just an insight into the coming weekend’s lottery numbers. This rite requires the faithful to take one of the many skulls from the ossuary and take care of it, for instance placing it in a box to keep the dust off, stroking it and cleaning it and perhaps giving it a name. [charme-gallery]The “penniless souls” require pampering and protection if they are to help obtain a grace, healing or a win on the lottery. The Fontanelle cemetery was closed following the havoc caused by the 1980 Campania earthquake, but it was reopened in May 2006, although not on a full-time basis. However this hiatus was unable to break the devotion of the faithful and cult of the “penniless souls” continues as strong as ever.

The program of the festival which will be held from May 1 – the day traditionally linked to Labor Day – to June 1, 2014, it is really thick and rich. And after having shown the first of the eight must-see tours of the exhibition that takes its cue from the famous text by Benedetto Croce: “Stories and Legends Neapolitan” , it becomes a must go to the second of eight planned tourist routes in the city siren Partenope. An authentic “grand tour” that leads us to discover the places that have made the art and history of Naples , thanks to the initiatives promoted by the city’s numerous cultural associations involved in the now customary celebration of spring.

It starts with the fact guided tours of the Art in the Metro stations , which will be held every weekend in the month of May, thanks to the volunteers of Legambiente 2000 Neapolis accompany tourists and fans to discover the heritage of contemporary art that is hidden in the belly Partenope, including piers , escalators, walls and and shelters of the extraordinary stations that make up the new line of the Naples metro.
Still, scheduled nature and historic trails in the company of representatives of the La Collina Gentile offering unusual itineraries in Naples alleys, stairs , art and green: a blend of art, nature and culture, but also of folklore and tradition.

Instead, for those who want to discover the city of Pulcinella in a different light , the Association Archintorno organizes for all Saturdays of the month tours in the dark, during which it will be possible to discover the baroque monument of San Giuseppe dalle Scalze admiring the sunset in the evening in the light of the torches.

[charme-gallery]

For those who love the sea instead of Naples, in May of Monuments offers a unique opportunity: the chance to throw yourself in the bright and beautiful waters of the natural reserve of Gaiola the discovery of archaeological remains submerged ancient Rome. There, on the seabed of Partenope, where the Association Center for Interdisciplinary Studies Gaiola non-profit organization will take you on days 1, 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 31 May and 1 June, organizing paths into the boat, the discovery of archaeological remains that lie just steps away from the coastline.

Finally, the first part of the second missed itinerary , provides a touch of spirituality with a visit to the Fontanelle Cemetery , sponsored by Mani e Vulcani scheduled on days 1, 4, 11,18, 25 May and 1 June 2 and a breath of art cocktail hour with an appointment scheduled for 2, 9 , 16, 23, 30 May with the initiative designed by the Viviquartiere Naples: art hour that includes a guided visit to the Mostra Impossibile and to follow assorted drinks and snacks.

How many things can be done in just two days?
A lot more than you think, and if you want some suggestions, here are some really interesting ideas for this weekend in Naples.
Saturday, February 1st, we start with three events to usher in the most of the arrival of the new month.

For those who are tired of companies and want to spend a different evening, then it is a must to stop at the Museo Civico Gaetano Filangieri in via duomo where to welcome the guests will be none other than the Prince Gaetano Filangieri.
The event organized by the Museum Project provides support for an actor – guide, through which the audience becomes the protagonist of the romantic dream of the ruler to save one of the most important Neapolitan palaces of the fifteenth century.

Do you feel too grown up for the fairy tales and legends? But certainly the ancient tradition of the “Wheel of Exposed” will not leave you indifferent.
Yes, because the next day’s itinerary just interested in the monumental complex of the Annunciation, located in the historic center of the city.
The tour organized by the Artedra lead visitors directly to the left of the arch century entrance of the basilica, where it is still visible, although now closed, the hole through which they were introduced into the wheel “exposed”, ie infants that mothers abandoned to poverty or because illegitimate.
During the evocative tour participants will learn about the history of the sacred, of the various forms of social assistance carried out over the centuries, as well as anecdotes and curiosities of life of the children of the Madonna and girls who lived in the convent as the ancient “rite of the handkerchief”.

[charme-gallery]

From the sacred par excellence, then we move to other spaces devoted this time artistically.
We are talking of the many theaters of Naples, understood not only as buildings used as representations but in the broadest sense, including the characters, the stories and anecdotes related to the magic of the stage.
The cultural association Insolita guida has developed a program should not be missed, to commemorate “The voices outside” in tribute to a great and undisputed protagonist of the theater scene as Eduardo De Filippo, through the genius of people like Scarpetta, Massimo Troisi and Nino Taranto.

But we move on now to the many activities planned for Sunday, February 2 , where you continue with three walks narrated unique. Always by the Association Insolita guida.
The first stage involves a leap in the history of Naples in the Fascist period, with the famous fictional character Inspector Ricciardi, born from the pen of the writer Maurizio de Giovanni.
During the visit, on the one hand will be revived the history and architecture of the period and on the other you will tell through reading, part of one of the exciting investigations of the popular commissioner, ending with a nice coffee at the large bar Gambrinus.

[charme-gallery]

Are not you tired yet ? Well then, if you sometimes discover the many faces of partenope, we have to descend into the belly of the ancient city and let yourself be led by the district health until Fontanelle Cemetery to admire the authenticity of ” Naples, “sotto e ‘ ncoppa”.
The journey through the historic fabric of the city and urban concludes with an initiative promoted by the cultural center Celanapoli that always offers for the day Sunday, an exciting sensory journey with a trip to Lake Averno for the places of memory traces, where the landscape, history, archeology, myth, literature seem to all be captured in one magical space.

A pair of comfortable shoes and a good dose of courage. And what is needed to venture among the mysteries of the “Valley of the Dead” of Naples, in an unusual journey through the alleys and streets of the district Sanità. A wonderful place, where cliffs are based on the very foundations of the ancient Neapolis. There, directly in the bowels of the hill where the geological features have favored, with the passing of the centuries, the development of large complex cemetery since the Greek era.

It was the presence of tuffaceous benches arranged along the sides of the mountain to make it possible, thanks to the ease with which this material can be worked and carved, and the extraction of the tuff (later used to build the city on the surface) and the construction of underground tombs and catacombs. Burial sites, then. Objects of faith and devotion from the time when Christianity was in its infancy.

[charme-gallery]

One of all, the most famous: the “Fontanelle Cemetery” , so named because of the presence, in the past, sources of water, but also called the cape ‘e morte (skulls) or of anime pezzentelle (souls beggars) in memory of a particular ritual that involved taking and arrangement of a skull (called in neapolitan dialect “capuzzella” ), which corresponded to a soul abandoned (“pezzentella” ), in exchange for protection from the deceased. A pit dug into the rock at the heart of which lie the remains of thousands and thousands of people are victims of the plague epidemic of 1656 ( found in the course of the arrangement of via Toledo between 1852 and 1853 ) and the cholera epidemic of 1836. Here are also stacked the remains found in 1934 during the renovation of Acton Street, and those originating from the crypt of the church of San Giuseppe Maggiore, then razed to the ground.

And this is the goal of the charming tour organized by Locus Iste in the first two Sundays of December (1 and 8 , the feast of the Immaculate Conception ) and around Christmas (Sunday, December 22), starting from 10.15. A guided tour of the real mountains of bones, skulls and skeletons of compositions, in a surprising reality in which magic and religion merge and mingle, creating an incredible mix of sacred and profane. An authentic “jumble of faith and error, of mysticism and sensuality”. An “almost pagan worship”, as he described it in the early ‘900 Matilde Serao.

[charme-gallery]

The Fontanelle cemetery, however, is also the place where you can discover the very special relationship that has always linked the city of Partenope to the concept of “afterlife“. A kind of bridge between two worlds: that of the dead on the one hand, that of the living on the other. As well as the place to make the acquaintance of famous people, such as “Capitano” , “Donna Concetta ,” ” Don Pasquale ” and ” Due sposini”, just to name some of the protagonists of stories and legends arose under the vaults of the cemetery of Sanità.

Stories of “anime pezzentelle” . Rumors, like the one linked to the death of Donna Margherita, died at age 54 and whose skeleton rests next to that of her husband, Filippo Carafa, conte of Cerreto (Duchi of Maddaloni), who died at the age of 84 years. The remains of two noble lie within two coffins: their skeletons are the only visible around the complex. Both are dressed. With a particular linked to the skull of Donna Margherita, which is preserved mummified: it has an open mouth, a detail that has spawned the “rumor” that the wife of Don Filippo would be choked to death by a dumpling.

Stories, then. Legends, with even more gruesome details. As one linked to the ghost of the “Capitano” of which, to be honest, there are multiple versions. The spirit of the deceased, outraged by a young man – who, to make fun of the bride (who with so much care and devotion dealt Skull) had stuck a bamboo stick in one of the empty eye sockets of the skull also inviting the his marriage – it materializes, under the guise of a policeman, at the wedding of the couple, causing their death and the death of all the guests.

[charme-gallery]

Stories sometimes veiled with a hint of bitter irony , such as “Donna Concetta”, to head sweating: a skull placed inside a glass case, which is always well polished, in spite of all the other skulls of the cemetery which instead are covered with dust. For devotees that on the head of “Donna Concetta” is none other than the “sweat of the souls in Purgatory” . Get unique and unrepeatable which still describe the soul and the “character” of a people undaunted, the Neapolitan, able to transform even the most tragic situations into opportunities for redemption and spirituality.

Appointment: Fontanelle Cemetery at 10.15

Via Fontanelle, 80 – Naples

Sunday, December 1, Sunday, December 8, Sunday, December 22
