An ancient tradition that has been handed down for a long time. The prestigious art of the crib in Naples has always been the emblem of the excellence of craft production.

For the craftsmen and their precious and evocative creations inspired by the sacred sphere of the Nativity, is dedicated to the exhibition “The Neapolitan Nativity”, sponsored by Claai, the Association of Craft of small and medium enterprises of the province of Naples.
A journey through the history, the customs and traditions of this unique art form was born and raised in the city of the Gulf, and that no accident took place in Naples, in the departure lounge of the airport of Capodichino.

Among the artists represented the master Umberto Pinfildi , authentic “fundamentalist” of the true and traditional Neapolitan crib , as he likes to describe himself. His , indeed, is a breakthrough for so-called “silent” , which provides, that is, the re-reading of some religious scenes typical of the crib, such as those of the Flight into Egypt of Mary and with the baby Jesus or the revision of the Holy Family , in which priority is given to the father-son relationship, starting from the position of St. Giuseppe and the Virgin Mary in the foreground behind.

Also, of great importance is the figure of the shepherd kept sheep , shown here in his physical strength , the result of careful anatomical studies. The all dictated by a personal feel, transferred to objects that Pinfildi defines as “talking” extreme synthesis of his thought.

The journey continues in the art crib with the valuable contribution of Tiziana Grassi, better known as the “doctor” who treats dolls , owner of the famous doll hospital via SpaccaNapoli . On this occasion, the fat has exposed a precious wooden sculpture, representing the Madonna’s head, made of wood and glass eyes. A valuable example coming directly from the old trunks of the family.

Charm , mystery and legend surround , as always, the ancient art of Neapolitan crib . And there are also many symbols , hidden or manifest, that for centuries characterized the most sacred and evocative representations . The same as in the craft shops of Via San Gregorio Armeno , in the heart of Decumani , lives its highest artistic sublimation . From the hushed awe of the shepherds, the sleep of lazy Benito , passing the royal procession of the Magi , to the divine mystery of the birth of the Child Jesus , the whole scene is covered by a unique and particular .

[charme-gallery]

Yet , on closer inspection , the custom crib refer especially to what can be called a true theatrum of groceries . Yes ! The teeming with shops , pubs and shops of food that surround the sacred scene of the Nativity , including dinner tables , taverns full of patrons and butchers meat transhipped , confers full membership, a folk dimension to the crib which is the equal to the spiritual.

The original vision of the tableau vivant culinary finds its highest expression in the” presebbio che se fricceca “, or the crib that moves, so to speak the dialect to describe the figures ” furniture” passion play staged in the scenic many nativity scenes on display in churches and museums of Partenope .

From December 8 to January 6, most Neapolitans have a nativity scene in their homes but, while it is being set up, family members usually argue over the best position for the various figurines (Mary, Joseph, the ox and donkey, the angels, shepherds and the Wise Men following the star; Baby Jesus will of course not be placed in the crib till midnight on Christmas Eve). Furthermore, according to Neapolitan tradition, the scene is not complete without a new figure each year, so it’s time to head to Via San Gregorio Armeno, the street of nativity scenes from which you cannot return home empty-handed. Here there is an endless succession of craftsmen’s workshops where figurines and features are made all year round. Those who prefer the DIY approach will find, wood, cork bark, moss, lights, electric motors and everything they need for their crib scene, while the lazier citizens can choose a ready-made scene in the size they prefer and need only worry about adding the figurines. [charme-gallery]Since the 18th centuries, Neapolitan cribs scenes have been admired worldwide and the artisans of Naples love adding figures that have nothing to do with the birth of Christ but reflect characters from the Bourbon Kingdom of Naples: the innkeeper, the water-seller, the washerwomen, and all the professions under the sun as well as incredibly realistic miniature baskets of fruit, fish and bread. Some artisans make nativity figurines drawing inspiration from contemporary figures and celebrities, including the all time favourite Diego Maradona Once this year’s figurine has been purchased, it’s time to head back home and the inevitable debate on where to place the newcomer, after which the crib scene waits only for baby Jesus to be placed in the manger at midnight on Christmas Eve, a sign that the festivities can begin and everyone can wish each other a merry Christmas.
