Castel dell'Ovo Napoli

There are paths that have to be made only on foot to enjoy the wonders of Naples: stunning panoramas, monuments, museums full of treasures, historical palaces. Let’s get on board!  The itinerary proposed by “Charme”.

Lungomare and Riviera di Chiaia

Starting from piazza Plebiscito it is possible to coast Santa Lucia and go toward the Lungomare, without cars and full of restaurants. Here stands the legendary Castel dell’Ovo, the fortress built on Megaride island where in the 7th century B.C. landed the people from Cuma who founded the city on Mount Echia. It is named after a legend telling that Virgil put a golden egg into its dungeons: if the egg breaks, the city will sink.

At the foot of the castle, there is Borgo Marinari, once dwelling of fishermen, today hosting restaurants and bar. ON the opposite side, via Caracciolo and the gardens of Villa Comunale di Chiaja, built between 1778 and 1780 by Vanvitelli.

In front of Castel dell’Ovo there is the wide via Santa Lucia, with Santa Maria alla Catena church hosting the rests of the painter Jusepe de Ribera, “Spagnoletto”, and of admiral Francesco Caracciolo, sentenced to death by lord Nelson.

Let’s stop and raise our eyes.
