Capri becomes the “Island of Art”

On September 4, the island of Capri is preparing to host the first edition of the Capri The Island of Art: an open-air festival – the brainchild of Franco Senesi – involving more than 20 artists of national and international contemporary, invited to dialogue with the places and stories of the island. Performance, audio and video installations, large sculptures, projected at night exhibitions in public and private places make up a busy program which lasts for four months and touches the city of Naples, in an ideal bridge between sea, land and subsoil with the involvement of Art Stations Underground and main sites of contemporary museums. Twenty-one site-specific projects, coordinated by the two curators Marco Izzolino and Lucia Zappacosta – in addition to two independent projects – make up the program of the event caprese, with 5 main installations of Lawrence Weiner, Santiago Sierra, Andrea Aquilanti, Mario Airò and Bianco Valente. Among the examples, the rocky outcrop of Mount Cappello at Anacapri (side of Monte Solaro) will become a natural canvas on which to life the laser projection devised by Airò, artist specializing in the transformation of places through the use of lights and beams: for 15 nights, the work of Mario Airò will be visible from the Piazzetta, around the side of Marina Grande and also from the sea. Project in the project is the exhibition “Canone Inverso” in an area of the fourteenth-century Certosa of San Giacomo, the Canonica, which reopens to the public after a partial recovery. The oldest monastery of Capri becomes stage and beating heart of the festival and in the spaces of the rectory will host four major installations of the artists Alessandro Cannistrà, Peter Demetz, Rocco Dubbini and Gino Sabatini Odoardi.

Reopens in Capri the church of St. Anne

Reopens in Capri the church of St. Anne, a real “treasure trove” Isle d’Azur. The oldest church in the old town which houses, among other works, a rare fresco of the 1300 remained hidden for several centuries, will be open for tourists and residents until 14 September (from 5 to 8 pm hours). St. Anne’s Church, which was the parish until 1595, reopened to visits with experts who will talk about the history of the ancient place of worship and the first village on the island. Thanks Cultural Association “Antemussa – The island of knowledge” chaired by Anna Maria Boniello, and the contribution of some of its honorary members, and collaboration with the parish of Saint Stephen tourists and vacationers will admire the precious church that stands in one of the most picturesque streets of Capri, one of Via Madonna delle Grazie. And to wait for the visitors there will be experts and art historians of the “Apeiron“, who collaborate in the initiative, and will welcome guests to illustrate the history and characteristics of a true “piece” of architecture and Memory caprese. St. Anne’s Church, in fact, is the symbol par excellence of the medieval history of Capri, it was the first parish of the island until 1595, when it was completed the St. Stephen’s Cathedral. The church is considered by experts to be of extraordinary artistic interest for the presence of decorations dating back to the thirteenth century. Thanks to the presence of a precious fresco dating back to the so-called “late-Giotto” representing a crucifixion dating – according to preliminary findings of Sovrintendenza- 1300. The discovery was made during a maintenance operation. Behind the wall that blocked the work, in fact, historians and experts have confirmed the signs of the time: between patterns and geometric elements, the Christ is perceived just as are perfectly visible images of the Virgin, St. John and cherubs. Currently the important fresco is being restored thanks to a donation of a pair of Capri adoption. And the reopening of the monument in the intentions of the association Antemussa, which in the past has also formed with a group of inhabitants the “Committee Borgo di Sant’Anna“, aims to re-evaluation of the whole area, which in recent years on the small churchyard and in the same church and, more generally, throughout the neighborhood also hosted cultural events that have animated and given new life to the village.

Capri is a glittering pearl where VIPs, nobility, writers and artists seek peace of mind. The Emperor Tiberius was the first of countless illustrious figures who chose Capri for their official residence and many of their sumptuous villas are open, at least in part, to public visits. Villa Malaparte, home of the great Italian writer and director Curzio Malaparte (a.k.a. Kurt Erich Suckert), is located on the rocky spur of Capo Masullo and is a striking example of 20th century rational architecture. Currently closed to the public, Villa Malaparte belongs to a foundation for the promotion of culture and science. On the same promontory stand the Roman remains of Villa Jovis and another architectural jewel: Villa Lysis. The home reflects alternate neo-gothic and neo-classical tastes and was designed by Edouard Chimot in the early 20th century for Baron Jacques d’Adelsward-Fersen, the French poet who left Paris in the wake of sex scandals. Fersen called it Villa Lysis after Plato’s dialogue on friendship and, some claim, homosexual love. Behind Villa Lysys, a path leading to the sea at Lo Capo, passes Astarita Park offering a stunning view of the blue waters of Bocche di Capri. It was donated to the island by banker Mario Astarita who built his spiritual retreat Villa La Falconetta nearby. [charme-gallery]This panoramic area also offers views of the charming Villa Monetella and Villa La Schiava with its colonnades and 19th century majolica floors. Overlooking the Gulf of Naples near Marina Grande harbour is Villa Torricella, residence of Kate and Saidee Walcott-Perry, now a renowned hotel.
Capri’s famous Piazzetta is nearby and the walk offers views of other extraordinary residences. Behind the cathedral of Santo Stefano is the Cerio Museum, one of the island’s main cultural institutions which writer, engineer and naturalist Edwin Cerio set up to commemorate his father Ignazio. The Museum is flanked by a library containing about 5000 books dedicated to the island. Edwin Cerio also built Villa Rosaio at Anacapri in 1911, naming it after the splendid roses in a neighbouring garden. Edwin also designed Villa Orlandi in the centre of Anacapri near Piazza Boffe, which has been part of the Cerio Foundation since 1939. Before being restored and bought by Giuseppe Orlandi, the politician who built the road between Capri and Anacapri, the building was part of an ancient convent. Anacapri is also home to the famous villa of Axel Munthe, the Swedish doctor who fell in love with the island on his first trip in 1884 when he saw the ruins of a small medieval chapel (San Michele) over the ruins of a Roman villa. Munthe designed and furnished the villa himself. Sadly, he was unable to enjoy his creation to the full as his eyesight began to fail and he was forced to move to the shade of Torre Materita. [charme-gallery]Now a museum, Munthe’s Villa San Michele numerous archaeological relics recovered by Munthe or donated by friends, while the garden contains a Greek tomb and a granite sphinx towering over Capri and Marina Grande. Villa Blaesus was the home of Russian poet Gorky who moved to Capri in 1906 after the failed Bolshevik revolution of 1905 and once had Lenin among his guests. Named after the legendary Greek poet, Villa Blaesus was later converted into a hotel and renamed Villa Krupp in homage to Alfred Krupp, owner of the German steel business and builder of Via Krupp which zigzags down from Capri town to Marina Piccola. Gorky moved to Villa Spinola, also known as Villa Behring after its former resident the German doctor who discovered the diphtheria vaccine.

The Capri International Prize has been awarded to Yang Lian, the greatest Chinese poet living. Several times nominated for the Nobel, Yang stunned the Western audience in the 90s by publishing a collection of poems titled “Where stops the sea” that marked, according to many critics, the transition from classical to modern Chinese poetry. Yang Lian wrote, in honor of the Prize Capri, an unpublished poem on the Blue Isle that he will read during the awards ceremony, scheduled for Saturday, September 6th at 19:00 in the Theatre of the Grand Hotel Quisisana. Capri, the pearl of theMediterranean, captures the heart and mind of visitors as soon as they set foot on shore. The traditional, whitewashed buildings and shops lure you into the maze of narrow streets and alleys, while the superb views offering every nuance of blue from azure to ultramarine invite you to explore into the lush vegetation. Then you can go for a refreshing drink in the famous Piazzetta and rub shoulders with the rich and famous before a spot of exclusive shopping along Via Camerelle. However, the view that you’ll remember forever is the sight from the top ofMountSolaro, a natural terrace at an altitude of nearly 2000 feet which can be reached from Anacapri.[charme-gallery]

The road fromCaprito Anacapri winds through vineyards and lemon groves and passes by the villa of Axel Munte, the eclectic Swedish physician and collector, but the climb to the top of the mountain is facilitated by a 12 min. Bute ride on a chair lift if you don’t feel up to the challenging walk along Via San Michele. However you get there, you will find it was well worth the effort: a breathtaking panorama taking in Anacapri, long white cliffs towering over tiny coves and bays and leading the eye to the town ofCapriwith its beaches at Marina Piccola and the Faraglioni stacks at Punta Tragara, the symbol of the Azure Isle.[charme-gallery]

Peeping out from the rich vegetation are numerous villas, including Villa Jovis, the only survivor of the reputed 12 villas that the Emperor Tiberius had built on the island. Slightly to the left is Punta del Capo, the headland that stretches out as if to embrace Punta Campanella on the mainland, and beyond that the tiny islands of Li Galli named after Ligeia, one of the Sirens who decided to kill herself along with Leucosia and Parthenope when they failed to enchant Odysseus.

Dominating the view of the Gulfs of Naples andSalernois the everpresent Mount Vesuvius, while to the left are the other two Neapolitan islands: Procida eIschia.
