In Naples the sacred and the profane meet. It is a place of myth, magic, prophecy, superstition, ritual and belief, and nowhere is this more evident than in the Fontanelle cemetery, home to the cult of the “penniless souls”. Every day for hundreds of years, Neapolitans have honoured the thousands of bones kept in this tomb dug out of the hillside in the city’s Sanità quarter, now a shrine to which believers flock in order to pray to the penniless souls for a grace or for their protection. [charme-gallery]There are thousands of skulls in the 6000 square meter cemetery, the mortal remains of the men, women and children who died in the 1656 outbreak of plague and were buried here by order of the city authorities. Over the years, other victims of epidemics were buried here in Via Vallone dei Gerolomini and, although they were mostly nameless paupers, here they were transfigured almost into saints, to whom the faithful would pray, telling them their hopes, fears and desires.

The poor from 17th century Naples are thus brought back to life through a well-defined ritual which believers must perform regardless of whether they seek a grace or just an insight into the coming weekend’s lottery numbers. This rite requires the faithful to take one of the many skulls from the ossuary and take care of it, for instance placing it in a box to keep the dust off, stroking it and cleaning it and perhaps giving it a name. [charme-gallery]The “penniless souls” require pampering and protection if they are to help obtain a grace, healing or a win on the lottery. The Fontanelle cemetery was closed following the havoc caused by the 1980 Campania earthquake, but it was reopened in May 2006, although not on a full-time basis. However this hiatus was unable to break the devotion of the faithful and cult of the “penniless souls” continues as strong as ever.

This year in Naples , for the 20th edition of May of the Monuments, the main cultural sites Neapolitans will be showcasing all their beauties to do … blow on the public! The program of the festival which will be held from May 1 – the day traditionally linked to Labor Day – to June 1, 2014, it is really thick and rich. And after having shown the first of the eight must-see tours of the exhibition that takes its cue from the famous text by Benedetto Croce: “Stories and Legends Neapolitan” , it becomes a must go to the second of eight planned tourist routes in the city siren Partenope. An authentic “grand tour” that leads us to discover the places that have made the art and history of Naples , thanks to the initiatives promoted by the city’s numerous cultural associations involved in the now customary celebration of spring.

It starts with the fact guided tours of the Art in the Metro stations , which will be held every weekend in the month of May, thanks to the volunteers of Legambiente 2000 Neapolis accompany tourists and fans to discover the heritage of contemporary art that is hidden in the belly Partenope, including piers , escalators, walls and and shelters of the extraordinary stations that make up the new line of the Naples metro.
Still, scheduled nature and historic trails in the company of representatives of the La Collina Gentile offering unusual itineraries in Naples alleys, stairs , art and green: a blend of art, nature and culture, but also of folklore and tradition.

Instead, for those who want to discover the city of Pulcinella in a different light , the Association Archintorno organizes for all Saturdays of the month tours in the dark, during which it will be possible to discover the baroque monument of San Giuseppe dalle Scalze admiring the sunset in the evening in the light of the torches.

[charme-gallery]

For those who love the sea instead of Naples, in May of Monuments offers a unique opportunity: the chance to throw yourself in the bright and beautiful waters of the natural reserve of Gaiola the discovery of archaeological remains submerged ancient Rome. There, on the seabed of Partenope, where the Association Center for Interdisciplinary Studies Gaiola non-profit organization will take you on days 1, 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 31 May and 1 June, organizing paths into the boat, the discovery of archaeological remains that lie just steps away from the coastline.

Finally, the first part of the second missed itinerary , provides a touch of spirituality with a visit to the Fontanelle Cemetery , sponsored by Mani e Vulcani scheduled on days 1, 4, 11,18, 25 May and 1 June 2 and a breath of art cocktail hour with an appointment scheduled for 2, 9 , 16, 23, 30 May with the initiative designed by the Viviquartiere Naples: art hour that includes a guided visit to the Mostra Impossibile and to follow assorted drinks and snacks.

The event coincides this year with the Universal Forum of Cultures Naples. And for 2014 will be inspired by the famous text of Benedetto Croce: “Stories and Legends Neapolitan”. Published for the first time in 1919 by Laterza. Maggio, will offer themed routes, which follow precisely the topics covered in the book written by the great philosopher. Program consists of a vast project of lectures, readings and guided tours on the “theme Croce” and contributions by local associations, which like every year propose their projects to the cultural city of the siren Partenope.

In this context, there is a special section starring: the Istituto italiano per gli studi storici, the national library “Vittorio Emanuele III“, the Società napoletana di storia patria, the Accademia pontaniana, the Società nazionale di scienze lettere e arti, the Istituto italiano per gli studi filosofici, the Fondation Premio Napoli, the Stazione zoologica “Anton Dohrn” to witness the deep bond with the teaching, the life and work of Benedetto Croce offering the contribution of the high traditions and heritages that guard.

In addition, there are eight paths artistic / literary itineraries tourist / cultural equally inspired by the work of the great philosopher that wind over the five weekends of “May”. Another feature is the special adoption program carried out by the Fondazione Napoli 99 with his project “The school adopts a monument” which, this year, will sit alongside the entertainment activities cultural activities in the territory of the historical schools in Naples. New for 2014, the extent of this activity to neighboring towns such as Castellammare di Stabia and Boscoreale who have embraced the program with its own “May” Neapolitan.

Promotional campaign of May of Monuments has been entrusted, even for the edition , 2014, to the talents of the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples for the occasion have developed a graphic design and audiovisual very powerful impact.

The liquefaction of the blood of saints is a mystic form of cult devotion perpetuated in memory of Christian martyrs. And nowhere is this recurrence more closely followed than inNapleswhere a dozen sacred ampoules are conserved, a fact that led one 17th century observer to call it “the city of blood”. The church of the Girolamini (Oratorians) in Via Duomo conserves the blood of St. Philip Neri and Sister Maria Giuliana Arenare, although neither liquefies, unlike that of St. Luigi Gonzaga (1568-1691) which liquefies every 21 June (the saint’s feast day) in the Gesù Vecchio church. Similarly, the blood ofSt. Johnthe Baptist in the church of San Gregorio Armeno liquefies during mass on his feast day (29 August) and that of St Laurence liquefies every 10 August. Profound devotion surrounds San Gennaro, the bishop of Benevento decapitated in Pozzuoli in the early 4th century by governor Dragontius and the very emblem of Neapolitan belief. Two ampoules of the saint’s blood are conserved in Naples cathedral, one of which is half empty because King Charles III of Bourbon had some of it removed. The miracle traditionally takes place during a solemn ceremony held in the cathedral in front of thousands of worshippers three times a year (on the first Saturday in May for the following eight days, on the feast day of San Gennaro (19 September) for the eight-day celebrations in honour of the city’s patron saint, and on 16 December).[charme-gallery] If the blood fails to liquefy, it is taken as a bad omen for the city while liquefaction is regarded as a positive sign. At the same time in the church of San Gennaro in Pozzuoli, the blood stain on the marble slab on which the saint was beheaded assumes a more intense colour. St. Patricia, a relative of the emperor Constantine, took her vows very young, gave her property to the poor and set off on a pilgrimage to theHoly Land. A storm wrecked her ship on the small island now occupied by Castel dell’Ovo inNaples, where she died after a brief illness and was buried in the Caponapoli convent. In 864 her remains were moved to the monastery of San Gregorio Armeno where they were coated in wax and placed in a bejewelled gold and silver urn. The blood of St. Patricia, the protector of women in child birth, has liquefied for almost 1200 years, normally on 25 August.
