In Naples, the Association Pio Monte della Misericordia offers an unusual sensory journey in total darkness. The event is scheduled for Sunday morning December 15 in the charming sala della quadreria of the neapolitan museum.

The tour is accessible to blind and not and  will be an exciting opportunity to test all the senses except that of sight, and discover the beauty and history of the institution that charity since its foundation, four centuries ago, carries out important solidarity initiatives .

All participants will be required to wear a blindfold , in agreement with the unconventional spirit of the event, sponsored by Dr. Amelia Elvetico. The tour includes a journey of about an hour, through the paintings in the art gallery of the via Tribunali complex which houses about 150 paintings of the most famous artists of the Neapolitan painting, including Luca Giordano, Vaccaro, Stanzione, Caracciolo and Ribera.

The route in the shade of decumani continues with a visit to the Church inside the museum complex dedicated to St. Maria della Misericordia, on whose altar dominates Caravaggio’s masterpiece “Le sette opere della Misericordia” in honor of the philanthropic tradition of the foundation.

The proposed activity on the public wants to be a time of enjoyment of art , but above all an invitation to reflect on the delicate issue of disability.

In light of this it is important to try to break down the barriers not only architecture, but especially the mental constraints that each of us , not to ” marginalize ” the social groups that differ from what is conventionally considered “normal.”

And  it’s certainly a difficult challenge to be pursued but thanks to the efforts of the Foundation and the collaboration of participatory citizens , the museums in the city like the other sites can definitely aspire to be accessible spaces for all.
