Once the defensive bulwark of the Anjourulers ofNaples, a venue for the elegant receptions of the Aragonese royal family and the stronghold of the Spanuish viceroys, Castel Sant’Elmo now forms a monumental hill side museum complex along with the underlyng San Martino Chartherhouse. It is from here, looking down between the blue sky and blue sea, that stands the squat figure of Castel dell’Ovo, old prison last king of Rome, Romulus Augustulus. On the tiny island of Megaris, where the exhausted Siren Parthenope finally reached the shore, stands one of Naples’ oldest and most beautiful castles.

The castle’s history is entiwined with that of the poet, alchimist and magician Virgil, long considered the protector of the city during Middle Ages. Some claim that the term “Ovo” refers to its oval layout, but Neapolitans believe the other story, according to which Virgil cast a spell on an egg which he then placed in a sealed metal casket and hid in the castle’s deepest dungeons. Opinion differs here as some claim the egg was buried in a niche, others say it was sealed in a glass jug and the walled in but they all agree that the egg holds the key to the fate ofNaples. When an arch collapsed during the reign of Joan I, the queen had to swear that she had replaced the “mysterious” egg in order to prevent the outbreak of panic in the city. Just beyond here Castelnuovo (better known as Maschio Angioino), a beautiful castle.

castel-santelmo-napoli-ing

Built in 1279 by the Charles I of Anjou, founder of the French dynasty inNaples, the castle was the residence of the royal family and the venue for a particularly intense political and cultural court life. In 1294 the castle’s main hall witnessed what Dante called the “grand refusal”, the abdication of the Pope Celestine V on December 13, and the appointment of the successor Boniface VIII on Christmas Eve. Other stories tell of the mysterious disappareance of prisoners from the Fossa del Miglio dungeons and huge crocodile which apparently entered the castle at night, through a trapdoor, to devour prisoners. Some say that Queen Joan used the crocodile to dispose of unwanted lovers. Alfonse of d’Aragon besieged theAnjoucastle and captured it on 12 june 1442 to become the new King of Naples and under Alfonse the magnanimous, the city lived its renaissance.

castello_aragonese-ischia

The short-lived Aragonese reing saw the reconstruction of the castle and the addition of a monumental triumph arch carved in marble above the main entrance. and here we are, finally, in Castel Capuano, where the poet Petrarch stayed in 1370 and also where Queen Joan II is said to have poisoned her lover. On the borders of the kingdom, in Ischia and Bacoli here the last fortress of Parthenope: the Aragonese Castle of Ischia and the Baia Castle Built on an ancient magma “bubble” more than 100 metres high, the magnificent castle in Ischia Ponte and the stone bridge linking it to the mainland were built by Alphonse of Aragon on the same site as Hiero of Syracuse’s 474 BC fortress. The castle incorporates a monastery, the 18th century baroque church of the Immacolata, the remains of the cathedral where Princess Vittoria Colonna married Ferrante d’Avalos marquis of Pescara in 1509, the Clarisse Convent with its cemetery and stone chairs where the nuns’ bodies were placed to dry and drain and the castle gardens served by a narrow trail dug out of the rock. Also the Baia Castle was built from Alphonse of Aragon. The first stone being laid in 1495 to defend Pozzuoli from the Moorish pirates. Today it became the Archaeological Museum of the Phlegraean Fields.

Vomero, Castel Sant’Elmo and San Martino

We see the stronghold which dominates the city: Castel Sant’Elmo, the building on the hill wanted by don Pedro de Toledo as a defense, erected on the Norman Belforte tower. There stands San Martino district, with the homonymous chartreuse hosting a museum, among Art Noveau palaces.

Is possible to get there on foot thanks to the rampe del Petraio, from Corso Vittorio Emanuele, near Suor Orsola Benincasa complex, or taking the 414 steps of Salita della Pedamentina, a long staircase excavated into tufa, which brings directly into the heart of Naples connecting Vomero with Montesanto district, in Pignasecca, the Neapolitan bazar.

On the hill, where shopping is a must, there are the luxurant gardens of Villa Floridiana, hosting the Museo nazionale della ceramica Duca di Martina; the church San Gennariello al Vomero, with treasures like Stefano Macario paintings and the basreliefs showing the martyrdom of San Gennaro; the elegant via Scarlatti; the geometric symmetries of piazza Vanvitelli and piazzetta Fuga.

Have a nice walk, then. Into history, tradition, and taste.

There was once a secret garden, perched on top of the medieval fortress of Castel Sant ‘Elmo of Naples, hitherto inaccessible, mysterious and enchanting course.
Today, finally, this great little piece of paradise that sits on the hillside vomerese, is revealed to the public in all its beauty.
All thanks to an international group of architects, curators, designers and craftsmen who created in 2013 “Le Jardin”, a project of art and architecture which, once realized, allowed to reach the unreachable plot of green.
It took some time because the idea should be passed to the practice but aided by the enthusiasm and the concreteness of the team that carried out the plan, it has come to completion of the work.
[charme-gallery]
Fundamental to the development of the project was the construction of a scale that makes it possible to overcome a little over 5 feet tall and reach the gate leading to the garden in the tuff, so far out of reach.
And the company, it is appropriate to say, well worth the money because what is offered to the eye of the visitor is a spectacle of nature that has no equal: the view from the panoramic terraces that rise to the top of the structure, hitherto undisputed reign of a natural vegetation.
Recall that the walls that surround Castel Sant ‘Elmo ending in an old guard now in ruins and abandoned for years, on top of which there was this abandoned garden that now, thanks to the initiative carried out by the group of Italian, French and a Scot, was recovered, giving the city a scenic and unique.
It is really valuable work, which by the way was voted winner of the third edition of
“A Work to the Castle” and returned to Naples the ancient outpost of the Monumental Complex of the historic building.
For those wishing to discover this precious gem in the countryside, there are tours Saturday, September 27th, from 12.00 to 18.00 and in the days Saturday 4 and October 11, 2014, in conjunction with other meetings and workshops.

Certosa of San Martino is laid on Vomero hill since seven centuries. The first stone goes back to the 14th century, when Tino da Camaino and Atanasio Primario built it in Gothic shape. Chronicles tell that it was founded by Charles of Anjou, and then consecrated under the reign of Joan I.

The restoration made by Cosimo Fanzago during the 17th century transformed the old monastery into a stunning religious complex. Between the 16th century and the 18th century, there worked the best architects and artists of the period – painters, sculptors, artisans of marble, wood and minor arts – like Fanzago, Spadaro, Ribera, Stanzione, Caracciolo, Sanmartino, Lanfranco, Solimena, and Vaccaro brothers. They enriched it with works of art, altars, and décors. During the Grand Tour, the chartreuse dedicated to San Martino, probably because of a chapel in his honour, was a favoured destination of men of letters and travellers in search of inspiration and knowledge.

The sumptuous Baroque church with marbles, sculptures, and the enchanting choir. The majestic cloister, with a Doric-Tuscan colonnade, statues all along the open gallery, the camellia garden. The amazing cloister “dei Procuratori”, with terracotta tiles and majolica floor made by Giuseppe Massa. The three-levels garden: the highest used to host the monks’ herbarium; the vegetable garden in the middle; the lowest with vineyards, reserved to the monks’ walk.[charme-gallery]The extraordinary room with the carriages: the oldest one, the “Carriage of the city”, was made in golden wood and enriched with paintings and valuable fabrics between the 17th and the 18th century. It went out for the last time in 1861, when Naples ceased to be the capital of the Reign of the Two Sicilies. There’s also the carriage which belonged to Queen Maria Cristina of Savoy, dating between the 18th and the 19th century.

During the restorations of 1886, made by Alberto Avena, royal and viceroyal coats of arms were put on the walls. Some of them come from Porta Medina, destroyed in 1873, and arrived to San Martino in 1889; the Bourbon of the Two Sicilies coat of arms comes from the door of Castel Nuovo. There is also the Colonna della Vicaria, originally put at the entrance of Castel Capuano, where, during the 17th and 18th century, insolvent debtors were humiliated, like in the 17th century painting “Il Tribunale della Vicaria”.

Since 1866 the National Museum of San Martino exhibits the best Neapolitan cribs (like the spectacular 18th century Presepe Cucciniello), arms and memorabilia of the Reign during different epochs. There are even ships, like the royal Bourbon dinghy, a Savoy dinghy, and a caique given to Ferdinand of Bourbon by Sultan Selim III.

Ninety years and not hear. The Rai (Italian Television) is celebrating the milestone with an exhibition that traces the history pages of the issuer of the State, set up for the occasion, in the halls of Castel Sant ‘Elmo, the former medieval fortress that stands on the hill Vomero.
The exhibition “1924-2014. Rai says Italy “has already opened and will run until July 24, reserving ample space to radio programming company in Viale Mazzini, who, remember, has almost reached the century of activity.
But first things first and explore the sections of the festival of Castel Sant ‘Elmo free admission, dedicated to the longest running public information service.
Opening of the exhibition, a selection of costumes introduces the viewer to the exhibition: presentation of a section titled “Rai, a beautiful Italian company” testifies to the origin and foundation of the company followed by 8 thematic sections , each with a testimonial, Sergio Zavoli for information, Emilio Ravel for the show, Andrea Camilleri culture and Piero Angela science.
The political section is instead entrusted to Bruno Vespa, the company Piero Badaloni, economy and sport Arnaldo Plateroti and Bruno Pizzul.

[charme-gallery]

A separate section, curated by Marcello Sorgi, is dedicated to the history of Radio told through the voice of the protagonists with many rare and unpublished materials put on display.
Still, there are nine thematic interactive stations that offer the visitor a selection of ninety years of radio programs, interactive Radiocorriere a column, relics such as the Bird of radio programs and documents, as the booklet on the “Standards for the preparation of a radio drama, written in 1973 by Carlo Emilio Gadda.
If you move, then, in the central exhibition space, you will be waiting a television set of the seventies, which was rebuilt in collaboration with the Museum of Radio and Television of Turin.
And finally, many surprises again with new songs such as the original sketches of costumes for “Joan, Grandmother of the Black Corsair”, illustrated plates with the characters for “The Four Musketeers” Nice and Morbelli, games boxed game shows, the manuscript original script of the film by Ermanno Olmi “the tree of Wooden Clogs” (1978) and won the Golden Lion at Venice in 2013 by Gianfranco Rosi with the film “Holy Gra”.
At the end of the exhibition, there will be a section that documents the activities of the CRIT-Centre for Research and Technological Innovation of RAI, the origins of planning the future of technology.
In short, a show not to be missed!

On the occasion of May 1st , the day dedicated to all workers , including state museums taking part in the festivities, thanks to the initiative promoted by the Ministry of Culture which provides free tours for tourists and citizens who want to explore the cultural sights of their city. Among these could not fail to respond Terra Felix that tomorrow will showcase its major tourist attractions.

But we see in detail the program by 1 May. And let’s start from Benevento, where you can admire the impressive Roman theater, the ancient building dating back to the second century and was built during the reign of Emperor Hadrian.
Still, always staying near the Apennines hinterland of Campania, we point out another interesting destination: the former Bourbon prison of Avellino from the original hexagonal structure, designed by De Fazio, with the consent of King Ferdinand I and realized in 1832 in the capital of Irpinia, now the headquarters of the Superintendent of BAP Irpino Avellino and the new Museum of the Risorgimento.

But it did not end there, because to throw open its doors will also be the ancient Domus Via degli Orti in Santa Maria Capua Vetere (the ancient Capua), a precious example of the Roman house, where they are still perceivable traces of the original structure.
We now move from the Vesuvian area and specifically in Pompeii, for a tour of the ancient archaeological excavations and the typical Roman houses buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD and then brought to light in modern times.

[charme-gallery]

And once in place, must is the archaeological site of Oplonti ,a few miles from Pompeii, in what today is the center of the modern town of Torre Annunziata ,and what was once the Roman city of Oplontis, buried for much of the rubble volcanic explosion of Vesuvio, but for which you have retrieved impressive testimonials and lush as the extraordinary patrician villa of Poppea and the rustic villa not far Lucius Crassius Tertius.

Another day, another race! This time we stopped in the charming Blue Island, admiring the unparalleled beauty of the Carthusian Monastery , the oldest monastery in Capri, whose foundation dates back to the second half of ‘300, as evidenced by the remarkable fresco above the portal of access to the church.

Let us now return to the city of siren Partenope and discover the routes that we reserve the beautiful Naples.
It starts with the National Archaeological Museum, then continue with the Museum of San Martino and so the view at Castel Sant ‘Elmo, where you can admire the magnificent view of the Gulf.
And to keep us company in this day of celebration, will also be the majestic halls of the Royal Palace, the Museum of Villa Pignatelli and the monumental complex of the Girolamini remember that includes the solemn church, the picture gallery and library.
This and much more will be open free of charge during the day tomorrow. Just an opportunity not to be missed!

State museums with free admission to the 1st of May
1 May 2014 , complete program on:http://www.beniculturali.it/mibac/export/MiBAC/sito-MiBAC/Contenuti/MibacUnif/Comunicati/visualizza_asset.html_984356857.html
